Why All the Backorders?

If you’re wondering why so many of the Stampin’ Up! products you’ve ordered are still on backorder, I thought you might appreciate some information.  There are three main factors that have set up the long delays for customers to receive some of their merchandise:

  1. Stampin’ Up seriously underestimated the demand for some of the products from the Occasions and Sale-a-Bration Catalogs.  They sincerely apologize, and will strive to adjust their expectations in the future.
  2. Many Stampin’ Up! items come from China, and Chinese companies are in the middle of a three week shut-down due to Chinese New Year, a very important holiday in that country.  Stamp sets are manufactured locally, so even if they go on backorder, they can usually be re-stocked fairly quickly.  But many accessory items are unavailable from the manufacturers until after the holiday period ends on March 5th.
  3. There has been a major labor dispute in west coast ports since July of last year.  This means there’s been a huge number of shipping containers piling up at the ports while the unions and shipping companies try to negotiate a contract.  The good news is that a tentative labor deal was reached on Saturday.  Dockworkers are starting to move the shipping containers, but the backlog is huge.  Here’s a picture of the Long Beach Container Terminal.  Your Happy Hearts Embossing Folder or Best Year Ever Accessory Pack may be in one of those containers!

The shipping problem has affected businesses throughout the United States, and we can only hope that the “tentative” deal doesn’t fall apart.

Meanwhile, we all get to practice a LOT of patience as we wait for backordered products to arrive at Stampin’ Up!, where they can be sent on to you!  Meanwhile Stampin’ Up! has decided to turn off ordering on any out of stock items that are manufactured in China or come through west coast ports until they are re-stocked.  They are updating the Backorder Report Monday through Thursday.  As your Demonstrator I’ll be happy to check on items that you still haven’t received.  If you haven’t already heard from me about these items, feel free to email me and I’ll check on availability for you.

That’s the skinny on why all the backorders  are taking so long to be filled!
