Each month I create a sketch and a color combination as a challenge for both my my demo group and my customers. I usually only have one customer who actually comes through and creates a card, although I keep hoping her enthusiasm will rub off on the other Mad Stampers in our classes.
I use My Digital Studio to create a barebones sketch, and then pull out scraps of card stock and play with color combinations until I choose five I like together (one of which is Whisper White or Very Vanilla).
After a couple weeks I will sit down and design my card. I am always challenged! What looked like pretty colors together in my hand turns out to be a stretch for me to actually use with stamps, ink, and paper! And can I really use all of them in one card? The sketch looked good on the computer, but how am I actually going to put it together in a card?! I have been creating these challenges for over a year now, and I love it–because they make me (and everyone else) stretch.
Here are the sketch and color combination for this month:
As usual, I had to work at it to get all the colors in one card. Here’s the result:
I decided to use one image from the My Friend stamp set and stamp it in a different color on each panel. Then I had to find a way to repeat each of the colors to bring the whole design together. It was easy to repeat the Marina Mist and Concord Crush, but it took a while to figure out how to fit in a second element in Wild Wasabi. The Flower Brad was the perfect solution.
Why don’t you try this challenge? Stretch your design skills and come up with your own sample. Then email me a picture of it and I will post it here.
Now go get stamping!
